History
The Sutherland Shire Art Society Inc., is the oldest Art Society in the area. The inauguration took place on the 18th January, 1970, in Ethel Jagelman’s home and was attended by eleven prospective members, all local artists.
The Society was regularly invited to participate in many important events such as linking a Visual Art Exhibition with the official opening of the Sydney Opera House, State Government initiatives, “Art in the Park” and “Art in the Camellia Gardens” and the month long festivities held to celebrate the long awaited official opening of the Sutherland Civic Centre (now Sutherland Entertainment Centre) in 1976 and the Bicentennial celebrations in 1988.
In 1983 we negotiated with Miranda Market Place for the use of Shop 26 in which to conduct an “art gallery” for the exhibition and sale of members’ work. Shop 26 was voluntarily staffed by members and guest artists attended monthly meetings to demonstrate their skills and give appraisements. When the time came to vacate Shop 26, monthly meetings and painting activities commenced in Jannali Community Hall up until recently but parking was always a challenge. As of the 7th February 2018, we relocated to the Loftus Community Hall, 119 Loftus Avenue, Loftus 2232 where there is PLENTY of parking.
When Southgate Shopping Centre opened, the Sutherland Shire Art Society availed itself of the management’s offer of space for display purposes and held regular successful exhibitions for many years but in recent years we have been welcomed by Menai Marketplace for our Art Exhibitions and continue to do say at the present time.
Membership is made up of professional and non-professional artists, others just enjoy art and passive participation in the activities of the Sutherland Shire Art Society.
